The mode changes the register, the sentence length and the word choice; the names, numbers, negations and commitments stay where they were.
What each mode actually changes
- Formal. Contractions expand, phrasal verbs become single verbs (“get back to me” → “respond”), and requests become explicit (“can you” → “could you please”).
- Casual. Long clauses split, contractions come back, the second person appears, and latinate verbs drop to everyday ones (“commence” → “start”).
- Confident. Hedges are deleted (“I think maybe we could probably” → “We should”), passives become actives with a named actor, and apologetic openers go (“Sorry to bother you, but”).
- Concise. Throat-clearing openers are cut, nominalisations return to verbs (“perform an analysis of” → “analyse”), and any clause that restates the one before it goes.
A neutral rewrite changes the wording without aiming at a register: a second version, not a different tone. Which modes your plan includes is on the pricing page.
Rewriting is not swapping synonyms
A thesaurus pass changes words and keeps the shape of the sentence: “use” becomes “utilise”, “help” becomes “facilitate”, and the sentence is now worse in the same grammar. A real paraphrase re-plans it. It can:
- move the verb forward and dissolve the nominalisation that was hiding it;
- split a forty-word sentence into two that each carry one idea;
- turn a passive into an active and name who did the thing;
- merge two sentences that were making a single point twice.
Five things stay fixed: named entities, numbers and dates, negation, modality (must is not should), and the order your points arrive in. If any of those move, the rewrite has failed however well it reads.
The failure mode worth checking for
Hedges sometimes carry the meaning, and both Confident and Concise remove hedges. “We may be able to ship on Friday” comes back as “We will ship on Friday”. You never made that promise. The same trap catches “we are considering a refund” and every sentence whose whole job was to stay non-committal.
So read the rewrite for commitments, dates and negations before you send it: fluent text is questioned less, which makes a confident rewrite of a careful sentence risky rather than merely wrong.

Register is the part you cannot look up
You can know every word in a sentence and still land at the wrong temperature. Neither direction is a grammar mistake, so nothing flags it.
- Textbook formality in a channel that does not want it. “Dear Sir, I would like to inquire whether…” sent to a teammate in a chat window.
- Politeness carried over literally from a first language. The formula that is normal at home arrives as deference or, more often, as an instruction, because its hedging device has no word-for-word equivalent.
Paraphrasing works in all 90+ supported languages, so the repair runs both ways: pull a stiff German email down to what a colleague would send, or push a too-casual English one up. If the text also has to cross a language, Translation keeps the register you set.

Which paraphrasing modes are available?

Will paraphrasing change my facts, names or numbers?
No. Named entities, figures, dates and negations are carried through unchanged; only the wording around them moves. The thing genuinely worth re-reading is not the facts but the commitments, because a confident rewrite can turn a hedge into a promise.
Can I paraphrase text that is not in English?
Yes, in all 90+ supported languages. Register is rebuilt with the device that language actually uses: du and Sie, tú and usted, the Japanese verb ending. Translating an English formality instead is what usually gives a rewritten second-language email away.
How much text should I rewrite at once?
A paragraph at a time gives the best result, within the limits of 15,000 characters per request in the extension and 4,096 per Telegram message. Rewriting a whole page in one pass tends to flatten it: the mode gets applied evenly, and a text where every paragraph has the same temperature reads as machine-made.
